BICENTENNIAL OBSERVANCEIn a special Bicentennial Observance of the founding of the Archdiocese of New York , we remember the soul and contributions of Patrick Joseph Cardinal Hayes, the third Cardinal Archbishop of New York , who passed into eternal life on September 4, 1938. On Tuesday, September 4, 2007, then, on the 69 th anniversary of his death, the 12:15 P.M. Mass will be offered in memory of Patrick Joseph Cardinal Hayes. May he rest in peace. Catholic New York in its “ Profiles of the Prelates who have led The New York Church ” indicates: “The first archbishop born in the archdiocese, Cardinal Hayes grew up on Manhattan ’s Lower East Side . Known as the “cardinal of charity,” his major achievement was re-organizing the 200 charitable activities in the archdiocese under the umbrella agency for Catholic Charities, and holding their work to rigorous professional standards so that they could expand with the aid of governmental funding. A popular figure with New Yorkers, his service began in the aftermath of World War I, when new laws that curbed immigration leveled off the Catholic population, and took him through the Depression of the 30s. It was also a period of Catholic migration from the teeming neighborhoods of Manhattan to the Bronx, in particular, and also to Staten Island and Westchester . Cardinal Hayes began as a parish priest in the archdiocese, then was secretary to Cardinal Farley, archdiocesan chancellor and president of Cathedral College . As archbishop, he opened 65 parishes, many of them with schools, as well as a number of hospitals and nursing homes. Cardinal Patrick Joseph Hayes’ priesthood underscores the Bicentennial theme of our Archdiocese: Through Faith We Grow
